Why silver tarnishes and what to do about it

If your silver ring has started to tarnish, it doesn't mean you were scammed. It means the silver is real.

Why does it tarnish?

Silver reacts with sulfur. Sulfur is present in the air, in sweat, in some foods, in rubber, and even in some fabrics. When silver comes into contact with sulfur, silver sulfide forms — a dark brown or black film. This is a normal chemical reaction, not corrosion or metal deterioration.

Pure 999 silver tarnishes slower, but it's too soft for jewelry. 925 silver contains copper, which accelerates tarnishing. That's why rings tarnish faster in areas that come into contact with the skin.

What accelerates tarnishing?

Perfume and cosmetics — chemicals on the skin react with the metal. Chlorinated water — in pools or tap water. Sweat — especially when you're nervous or exercising. Some medications change the chemistry of sweat, causing silver to tarnish faster than usual.

And yes: some people "oxidize" silver faster than others. This isn't superstition — it's simply different body chemistry.

What actually helps?

A soft cloth after each wear — the simplest and most effective method. If you wipe it after taking it off, the tarnish doesn't have time to form.

For already tarnished silver — baking soda and foil. Line a bowl with foil, shiny side up, add a spoon of baking soda, and pour in boiling water. Place the jewelry so it touches the foil. After 3-5 minutes, remove, rinse, and dry thoroughly. No chemicals, no abrasives.

Toothpaste — no. The internet recommends it, but toothpaste scratches the metal surface. Over time, this becomes noticeable.

How to slow down tarnishing

Store in a closed box or zip-lock bag — minimal air exposure, sulfur doesn't come into contact with the metal. Remove before swimming, showering, or exercising. Put on after applying perfume and cosmetics — not before.

Frequently Asked Questions

My silver tarnished in one day — is this normal?

It depends on the conditions. If you were in a pool, sweated a lot, or your skin came into contact with chemicals — yes, one day can cause noticeable tarnish. This is reversible.

Does rhodium plating solve the problem?

For a while — yes. Rhodium does not oxidize and provides a stable white color. But the plating wears off, especially on rings. After 1-3 years, it needs to be renewed by a jeweler.

Does tarnished silver harm the skin?

No. Silver sulfide is harmless. The most that can happen is a black mark on the skin, but this washes off easily.
