How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home: 3 Ways (DIY)
Ordering a ring online and getting the wrong size is the most common mistake when buying jewelry. Everyone's fingers are different, and "average size" only exists on paper. Here are three ways to measure correctly at home.
Method 1 — With string or a strip of paper
Wrap a string around the finger where you plan to wear the ring. Mark the spot where the end of the string crosses the rest. Straighten it out and measure the length with a ruler in millimeters — this is the circumference of the finger.
Ring size = circumference ÷ 3.14. For example, a circumference of 54 mm: 54 ÷ 3.14 = 17.2 → size 17 or 17.5.
Important: wrap the string snugly but without squeezing. And consider the knuckle — the ring should pass over it. If the knuckle is larger than the finger at the wearing point — measure by the knuckle.
Method 2 — Using an existing ring
If you have a ring that fits, place it on a piece of paper and trace the inner circle with a pencil. Measure the diameter of the resulting circle with a ruler in millimeters. This is the size.
For example, a diameter of 17 mm = size 17. Most Ukrainian jewelers use diameter as the size.
Method 3 — Body parameter chart
A rough but useful guide if you don't have anything handy for measuring:
Size S (height up to 165 cm, weight up to 55 kg) — usually 15.5–16.5
Size M (height 165–172 cm, weight 55–65 kg) — usually 17–17.5
Size L (height from 172 cm or weight from 65 kg) — usually 18–19
This is not an exact method. But if you're buying a surprise and have no other reference — it's better than guessing.
When to measure
Not in the morning or evening — fingers swell in the morning and after physical exertion. The most accurate result is obtained in the afternoon at room temperature. In winter, fingers are slightly thinner than in summer — this should also be considered.
Adjustable size — when it helps
If you are unsure about the size or are buying a gift, pay attention to rings with an adjustable size. Some SIERRA SPACE rings have an open size that adjusts to the finger. The size problem simply disappears.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the ring doesn't pass over the knuckle?
Measure by the knuckle, not the finger. Especially if you wear the ring on your index or ring finger where the knuckle is more prominent.
Is there a big difference between size 17 and 17.5?
Half a millimeter. It's noticeable but not critical. If you are debating between two sizes, choose the larger one. A slightly loose ring is better than one that pinches.
Do sizes differ in different countries?
Yes. In Ukraine, size = inner diameter in millimeters. The USA and UK have a different system. SIERRA SPACE uses the Ukrainian system — diameter in mm.
